Debt Management Service

A debt management service can help you get out of debt, it's true. But you have to find a good one first.

Debt Management Service

What do you expect from a debt management service? Do you even know what you should expect?

More than Expected

When you're looking for a debt management service, there are some basic things you should expect:

  • A good debt management service (and its counselors) will be nationally certified and accredited
  • They will have a physical street address and a phone number, not just a post office box
  • They will not ask for payment before they provide any services
  • You should expect a good debt management service to go over your finances thoroughly before making any recommendations
  • You should expect a thorough explanation of any plan they recommend to you
  • You should expect a contract that spells out your obligations and fees before you sign up

And here are a couple of things you will find from a really over-the-top debt management service:

  • They will tell you the things you can do on your own (for free) to try to get out of debt before you commit to a debt management program
  • They will suggest (or better yet provide) credit counseling
  • They will keep you informed of your progress

To find a really good debt management service, fill out several forms online and submit them. Wait the requisite 24 hours to get recommendations from these companies, then compare them. If you have any questions at all, don't be afraid to call them! If they seem hesitant about their answers, give 'em the boot! There are way too many debt management companies out there to choose from to waste your time on one that is not completely honest and up front with you.

If you don't want to take this approach, you can always go the Department of Justice's web site. They have a list of government-approved debt management services. This way you can rest assured that you've found a reputable, trustworthy debt management service.
